La Budots (D’Original Wa’y Tugpahay, after Matisse) 2025
Intense warm colors against the cool blue-green background and the rhythmical succession of dancing nudes convey the feelings of emotional liberation and hedonism, but the figures are the earliest depictions of outsiders of bisayas - Pintados from the Manila Manuscript, later known as the Boxer Codex (1590). Somehow, this view from outside still holds today, and why not? I’ll have my allegedly primitive bliss all damn day.
